Creation
At the earliest conceptualization of this challenge, I was merely looking for nearby technical terrain to run on in preparation for some endurance trail races. As a newcomer to many of these peaks and trails, I was blown away by what had been mere minutes from home. The more I spent time on these trails, the more I found myself advocating for them at every given opportunity. It wasn't uncommon in these conversations to hear that someone had hiked one or two, but for the most part they had simply overlooked the bulk of Lake George's mountains.
Sometime over the summer of 2016, I was introduced to an ultra challenge in Saranac Lake a friend had recently finished, and saw how these lesser-known peaks in the area had become a significant destination in the Adirondacks. With some research on other such challenges in the region, I made the connection for how perfect this model could be applied to Lake George, and how this was my opportunity to effectively promote my own favorite corner of the Adirondacks.
My passion to see this come to life quickly took over, and it was only a matter of days before I had designed the 12ster as a 24-Hour ultra challenge and set a start date. Since that day, I have been blown away by how fast the challenge has been adopted, and I can't express how excited I am to witness the joy this challenge has brought to so many. I continue to look forward to hearing more of your stories, and am excited to see how this will continue to grow.
Mission
To promote and advocate for the Southern Adirondacks through crafting an experience that is both memorable and meaningful to achieve.
First Ultra 12sters
The Lake George 12ster was officially soft-launched on August 20th, 2016 when Zephyr Cady and I completed the challenge as a 24-Hour ultra.
First Winter Ultra 12sters
A brave group accepted the Winter Ultra challenge on the very last day of "Winter", March 21st, 2017. Joshua Myers, Sarah Frasier, and Dan Wolfe succeeded in becoming the first Winter Ultra 12sters. Sarah also became the first female to complete the 12ster as an Ultra.
Current Goals
